SDGs, Planetary Perspective and the Social Economy: Insights from Professor Allan Southern’sTalk

Last Wednesday (2nd October), we had the privilege of hosting Professor Southern, from the University of Liverpool School of Management,  for a fascinating talk on the intersection of social economy, Planetary Boundaries, the SDGs and Doughnut economics. Professor Southern elaborated on how social economy enterprises can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future.

The talk explored the concept of Planetary Boundaries and how exceeding these limits can lead to significant environmental and social challenges. Doughnut economics, a framework proposed by Kate Raworth, offers a compelling alternative, suggesting that economies should aim to meet the needs of all people within the boundaries of our planet.

Professor Southern also shared inspiring examples of social economy businesses, including Mondragon in Bilbao and Can Cook/Well Fed in Liverpool. These case studies show the potential of social economy enterprises to create sustainable economic models focusing on social and environmental well-being.
